AB 540 Students

The Assembly Bill 540 (AB-540) was signed into law on October 12, 2001 in California. This law authorizes any student in the state of California who is able to meet specific criteria to pay-in-state tuition at any public university or community colleges without regard of citizenship.
AB 540 Students must meet the following requirements:
- High school attendance in California for three or more years.
- Graduated from a California high school or attainment of the equivalent such as a GED.
- Register as an entering student at, or current enrollment at, an accredited institution of higher education in California: University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), and all community colleges.
- If the person is without a lawful immigration status, the student must complete an affidavit with the public college or university stating that the student has filed an application to legalize his or her immigration status, or will file an application as soon as he or she is eligible to do so.
- Student information provided to the college or university is confidential and protected by Federal Law.
