College Overview

The Weber Honors College provides an academic environment in which students experience a dynamic, interactive, and engaged education. The objective of the Weber Honors College is to provide the richest possible intellectual experience by helping students become conversant in multiple disciplines, think flexibly, solve problems and pursue the creative expression of ideas. The Weber Honors College features a unique interdisciplinary curriculum made up of small, discussion-based seminars and innovative teaching techniques that promote active engagement in the subject area and prepare students for high-impact educational experiences beyond the classroom, including study abroad, research, leadership, service, and creative activity; and for future graduate work and successful careers regardless of their chosen field of study.

Recognizing that contemporary issues and problems defy easy categorization, the scope of the Weber Honors College curriculum is deliberately interdisciplinary, flexible, and capable of meeting the needs of students across a wide range of disciplines and majors. The curriculum (Honors Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies) emphasizes discovery, creativity, initiative, responsibility, collaboration, leadership, and independent thought. These are the attributes that enhance opportunities for individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. The integrative nature of the coursework invites students to reach beyond the boundaries of their academic major and join in scholarly conversation with students and faculty from disciplines other than their own.

Weber Honors College Mission

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
- African Proverb

One of the most important aspects of participating in the Weber Honors College is becoming part of the Honors culture at SDSU and getting to know other diverse, curious, and motivated students who share a commitment to academic excellence. The mission of the Weber Honors College is, however, about much more than aspiration and academic excellence.  It also provides a unique community of place and purpose and a gathering space for diverse students who share a commitment to achievement, to giving back to the communities in which they live and work, and to deep engagement. The Weber Honors College fosters an intentional community of diverse, engaged students, a unique atmosphere of creativity, interdisciplinary conversation, intellectualism, and collegiality.

Honors at San Diego State played a significant role in the development of my personal and professional aspirations. As a current PhD student in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University, I am confident much of my present success would not have been possible without the unique opportunities afforded by the Honors experience of which I was part, and its commitment to intellectual curiosity and self-motivated inquiry.

I now realize how much more connected to San Diego State I became as a result of my enrollment in Honors. I take pride in knowing that Honors provided me with every chance to get involved on campus, reach out to the community, learn about our diverse world, build genuine friendships, and consistently challenge myself in new and exciting ways. The Weber Honors College ensures that future Aztecs have all of the opportunities I had and serves to grow the academic environment necessary for creating better world scholars and leaders.
