Elementary Education Emphasis - Literacy Focus

On this page: Learn about the elementary education emphasis with a focus on literacy education, and find links to the course list and options for this emphasis.

Note: The following information applies to Liberal Studies majors entering the program in catalog year 2014 and later. If you began your studies during catalog years 2011-13, find guidance on completing your degree.

About the Literacy Focus

Students who choose the literacy focus develop depth in linguistics, literature, and theatre.

Middle School Authorization (ISMA)

The Literacy Focus is designed so that students complete the 32 units and specific coursework required to earn a Middle School Subject Matter Authorization in English, provided they earn a grade of C (2.0) or better in each course.

Students who complete the requirements for the Liberal Studies major with an emphasis in Elementary Education with a Literacy Focus and subsequently earn a CA Multiple Subjects Credential will qualify for — and are encouraged to apply for — an Introductory Subject Matter Authorization (ISMA). When coupled with a multiple subject credential, the ISMA will allow you to teach English in middle school, if you so desire.

Submit Choice of Content Focus Form

When you have decided which content focus you wish to pursue, complete and submit the Choice of Content Focus Form. (You may change your mind later, but you will need to submit a new form). Download the form.
