Education Generalist Emphasis - Literacy Focus

This emphasis is preparation for teaching in elementary school and is open only to transfer students who have completed the Transfer Model Curriculum.
Middle School Subject Matter Authorization (ISMA)
Note: Students who choose the literacy focus in this emphasis complete the 32 units and specific coursework required to earn a Middle School Subject Matter Authorization in English, provided they earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or better in each course. When coupled with a multiple subject credential, this authorization allows individuals to teach elementary school or English in middle school if they so desire.
Letter Grade Requirement
All courses, except LIB S 498, must be taken for a letter grade and cannot be taken CR/NC.

Math and Writing Assessments
Math Proficiency Assessment (MPA)
Underlined upper division classes are not open until you pass the Math Proficiency Assessment. Footnotes in the Class Schedule contain information on enrollment restrictions for courses. Please read them carefully when searching for classes.
Writing Proficiency Assessment (WPA) Scores and Implications
Take the WPA the summer prior to Junior Semester I. The score you earn on the WPA will dictate the classes you need for your junior year and may impact your graduation date.
If you score:
- 8 or above: No further lower-division writing classes required.
- Use tables 9 and 10 (below) if you score 8 or above on the WPA.
- Less than 8:
- Ling/RWS 280– Required by the university
- Ling/RWS 253 – Required by Liberal Studies
- Use tables 7 and 8 (below) if you score lower than 8 on the WPA.
