The ISMA Option

On this page: Learn about the Introductory Subject Matter Authorization (ISMA) option for teaching math, science or English in middle school.

About the ISMA Option

The Introductory Subject Matter Authorization (ISMA) allows you to teach not only in elementary school, but also to teach either math, science or English at the middle school level.

Math

Pursue a career teaching math in middle school. This option prepares students to gain their ISMA in Mathematics. Along with this option, you should choose the Elementary Education Emphasis, Math Focus. (Note: You must earn a "C" or better in each course for the ISMA in math. Math classes taken during study abroad cannot be used for the ISMA.)

Science

Pursue a career teaching science in middle school. This option prepares students to gain their ISMA in Science. Along with this option, you should choose the Elementary Education Emphasis, Science Focus. (Note: You must earn a "C" or better in each course for the ISMA in science. Science classes taken during study abroad cannot be used for the ISMA.)

English

Want to teach English in middle school? Our program embeds the unit requirements so that you can teach Language Arts in middle schools. (You do not need to take additional option courses to teach English at the middle school level.) Simply choose the Elementary Education Emphasis, Literacy Focus (or Education Generalist Emphasis, Literacy Focus, if you are a transfer student). When you complete the requirements for the Liberal Studies major with an emphasis in Elementary Education / Literacy focus and subsequently earn a CA multiple subjects credential, you qualify for, and you are encouraged to apply for, an introductory subject matter authorization in English at the middle school level. Consult the Liberal Studies advisor for assistance.

Earn your ISMA in our program + Multiple Subject Credential = teaching in both elementary and middle school! (Note that the ISMA is embedded in the Literacy Focus.)
