Extended Pathway: Math or Science Emphasis for Middle School

On this page: Learn about how you can complete additional coursework and prepare for a multiple subject credential to teach mathematics or science at the middle school level or higher.

Students with a keen interest in mathematics or science and the possibility of teaching middle school or even higher should consider the Math or Science Emphasis.

Generally, students begin by pursuing the Elementary Education Emphasis with a focus in Math or Science. When it is time to choose an option, a student who wishes to can choose the ISMA option. By doing so, the student will complete additional coursework in their discipline to address middle school math or science content in greater depth.

  • Students complete the traditional Liberal Studies major plus an expanded specialization that includes the subject area coursework needed to qualify for an Introductory Subject Matter Authorization from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (a total of 32 units in one subject area).
  • If students plan carefully, they are able to complete the traditional major and expanded specialization in approximately 8 semesters and the post-baccalaureate credential program during a ninth and tenth semester.
