Orientation

On this page: Find information about orientation and advising appointments for freshmen and transfer students entering the Liberal Studies major at SDSU. Also find information on virtual orientation for current SDSU students who are changing their major to Liberal Studies.


Orientations are essential to a successful start at SDSU. All students must attend an orientation before they are eligible for individual advising.  And attending an in-person orientation allows you to register early for classes!

Orientation for Freshmen / First Year Students

All incoming freshman are expected to attend an orientation during the summer before their initial semester. These orientations are sponsored by the SDSU Office of New Student & Parent Programs and are generally held in late July.

At your orientation, you will:

  • Receive handouts listing major requirements
  • Create a wish list of classes for the fall semester
  • Learn how to use online resources that the university provides
  • Learn about various pathways to teaching
  • Learn about study abroad
  • Register early for classes

Make an appointment for advising

After attending a freshman orientation, you should make an appointment to see the Liberal Studies advisor to set up an advising file. The file will be kept in the Liberal Studies office and used to track your progress through the major.

Download and complete an Advising Sheet (choose the form based on your Focus). Bring the completed Advising Sheet with you to your appointment. 


Orientation for Transfer Students

All incoming transfers are expected to attend an orientation during the summer before their initial semester at SDSU. These orientations are sponsored by the SDSU Office of New Student & Parent Programs and are generally held in early August.

At your orientation, you will:

  • Receive handouts listing major requirements
  • Create a wish list of classes for the fall semester
  • Learn how to use online resources that the university provides
  • Learn about various pathways to teaching
  • Learn about study abroad
  • Receive a special, preliminary degree audit report, which is essential for planning your first semester
  • Register early for classes

Make an appointment for advising

After attending a transfer orientation, your next step is to make an appointment to see the Liberal Studies advisor to set up an advising file. The file will be kept in the Liberal Studies office and used to track your progress through the major. Download and complete the Appointment Preparation Form (choose the form for transfer students). Bring the completed form with you to your appointment.


Switching your Major to Liberal Studies? Complete a Virtual Orientation

Students who wish to change to Liberal Studies from another major after arriving at SDSU should complete a Virtual Orientation and accompanying quiz.

To request access to the online orientation, contact the Liberal Studies program in person or via email at libst@sdsu.edu (provide your Red ID #).

By completing the virtual orientation, you will:

  • Gain access to handouts listing major requirements
  • Learn how to use online resources that the university provides
  • Learn about various pathways to teaching
  • Learn about study abroad
  • Learn how to read the degree evaluation (Degree Audit Report) provided by the university

Degree evaluation (Degree Audit Report)

You should have on hand a copy of your degree evaluation with you during the virtual orientation.

  • You can obtain a degree evaluations can be obtained through the web portal if you are already a declared Liberal Studies major.
  • If you have not yet declared the Liberal Studies major, you can obtain an unofficial degree evaluation for Liberal Studies from the Academic Advising Center in Student Services West, 1551.

Make an appointment for advising

After attending a virtual orientation, you should make an appointment to see the Liberal Studies advisor to set up an advising file. The file will be kept in the Liberal Studies office and used to track your progress through the major.

Download and complete the Appointment Preparation Form (choose the form for newly admitted freshmen). Bring the completed form with you to your appointment.
