Human Research Protection Program Staff

Our Research Affairs analysts provide the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and research community with support concerning the protection of human subjects in research. Although they attend the monthly IRB convened meeting and currently serve as alternate IRB members, most of the work they do occurs outside of the meeting.

Our mission is to ensure the protection of the rights and welfare of all human participants as well as providing professional guidance and administrative support to researchers. Our mission is fulfilled through our broad education program for faculty, students and staff, as well as reviews guided by the standards set forth in the Code of Federal Regulations by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the ethical principles established by the Belmont Report: Respect for Persons, Beneficence and Justice.

The SDSU IRB received roughly 1,500 requests last year for review of new, modified, or continuing protocols. Each of these requests is screened by an analyst to determine if it requires review by the convened committee. Ninety percent of all requests do not require review by a convened committee. These other requests are reviewed administratively by an analyst. Dependent on the protections that must be assessed for a particular administratively reviewed request, the analyst may coordinate an additional review by another board member with specialized expertise or training. Every request is assigned to an analyst who is then responsible for corresponding with the researcher.
