Aztecs basketball will appear on ESPN and Cox Channel 4 will air additional athletic events this season.
Coach Steve Fisher will coach a pair of exhibition games featuring several NBA draftees on Sept. 21 and 22 in Utah.
Fisher will coach a squad highlighted by former SDSU standout and NBA draft pick Kawhi Leonard, who is a member of the San Antonio Spurs. Both teams, including Fisher’s, will be chosen in a draft-style format the week of the event.
The game on Sept. 21 will take place at Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, while the Sept. 22 contest is set for Marriott Center in Provo. Tip time for both games is slated for 7 p.m. MT.
This past season, Fisher guided the Aztecs to their second straight Mountain West championship and their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. SDSU finished 2011 with a school-record 34 victories, including two wins in the NCAA Tournament, and appeared in the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
Aztecs join ESPN marathon
For the third consecutive season, the San Diego State men’s basketball team will be a part of ESPN’s College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. This season, the Aztecs will take on Baylor in Waco, Texas, on Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT. The game will be aired live on ESPN.
The non-conference game will be SDSU’s first road test of the season and will come two days after the conclusion of the Basketball Travelers Classic, set for Nov. 11-13 at Viejas Arena. During the season-opening tournament, the two-time defending Mountain West champions will play three games in three days against teams to be announced at a later date. The early season matchup is a rematch of the 2009 NIT national semifinal contest in New York City when Baylor upended the Aztecs en route to a spot in the NIT championship game.
This year’s date on ESPN will mark the first time San Diego State has appeared on the network since Nov. 16, 2009, when it played at Saint Mary’s during the team’s first appearance in the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.
Last season, SDSU was a part of the 24-hour extravaganza and defeated No. 11/12 Gonzaga on the road in a game televised on ESPN2.
With the addition of the Baylor game to its television schedule, San Diego State will have a minimum of 18 games televised live with the potential of having more added as the season nears.
Cox Channel 4 to air Aztecs
Additionally, Cox Cable of San Diego will simulcast on Cox Channel 4 all Aztec football and men’s basketball games produced by CBS Sports Network and The Mtn. during the 2011-12 season. As a result, a minimum of 11 football games and 13 men’s basketball games will be available to Cox basic cable subscribers on 4SD this season.
In addition, select volleyball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball games shown by either CBS Sports Network or The Mtn. will be simulcast by Channel 4 San Diego.
The Mtn. is currently available to San Diego-area households via Cox Cable (channel 320) and DirecTV (channel 616).
