The SDSU Police Department and Associated Students teamed last week to present Campus Safety Awareness Day.
The event focused on auto theft and auto burglary prevention on campus. The SDSU Police Department handed out free anti-theft steering wheel locks, while AS staffed a prize wheel featuring a variety of promotions for students.
Dunking crooks
The event also featured a dunk tank where people could try and "dunk-a-crook." The crooks were members of the AS council dressed in striped "prison attire" and black masks. Participants who successfully dunked a crook won a free steering wheel lock.
Displays shared current theft trends on campus and suggestions for community members to help secure their property and vehicles.
One display listed the top four stolen vehicle models on campus, including:
- Honda Civic
- Jeep Wrangler
- Chevy Trailblazer
- Volkswagen Jetta
K-9 unit
One of the police department's two K-9 officers appeared at the event with his partner, Nemo, and provided information about the role of K-9 units.
AS and the SDSU Police Department split the cost of the anti-theft steering wheel locks, which were provided by Winner International, the device manufacturer.
The locks have been distributed to SDSU students at various events, including orientation, and are available at the SDSU Police Department Office on 55th Street, next to Peterson Gym and across from the Aztec Recreation Center.
Obtain a steering wheel lock
For more information about the locks or how to obtain one, contact Sgt. Mike O'Deane or Officer Jennifer Hart with the SDSU Police Department at 619-594-8475.
