Men's team member and sophomore J.J. Spaun received the honor for April.
J.J. Spaun
San Diego State sophomore J.J. Spaun has been named the Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for April.
Spaun, of San Dimas, Calif., posted the best month of his career with two top-three finishes, including his first-ever individual title. In three April tournaments, Spaun collected seven consecutive sub-par rounds and five sub-70 rounds.
A busy April
Spaun began the month by winning the Thunderbird Invite in Tempe, Ariz. He defeated Chris Williams of the University of Washington on the first playoff hole after chipping in from the rough. The field included 89 participants from eight of the top 15 teams in the nation.
Spaun recorded three sub-par rounds during the tournament and finished with an 8-under-par 205 on the par 71, 7,057-yard Karsten Golf Course. His 54-hole total of 205 tied for fifth-best in school history and is also a tournament career-low.
One of the best
In his second tournament of the month, Spaun helped the Aztecs to a second-place team finish at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. He tied for third after carding a 4-under 206 on the par 70, 6,742-yard Stanford Course. He was one of only two golfers in the field of 107 players with three sub-70 rounds over the 54-hole tournament.
Spaun concluded the month as SDSU's second-best golfer at the Aggie Invitational held in Bryan, Texas. He placed in a tie for 41st after firing a 4-over 220 (71-77-72) on the par 72, 7,146 Traditions Course. The Aztecs finished the tournament fourth, ahead of No. 7 Texas and No. 24 TCU.
