Of critical value

"Diversity is one of the critical values of San Diego State," said Provost Nancy Marlin.

"We are proud to be a university that not only admits a highly diverse student body but, more importantly, graduates a highly diverse group of students."

The rankings, published in the May issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, were compiled using 2009 data from the National Center for Education Statistics. That year, SDSU conferred bachelor’s degrees on 1,430 students of Hispanic descent.

Ranking high for graduate degrees

SDSU also ranked No. 31 for master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics by the same publication, with 200 degrees conferred and No. 77 for doctoral degrees with 66 degrees conferred during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Additionally, SDSU ranked in the top 10 nationally in the English literature program area for undergraduate degrees awarded to Hispanics.

In fall 2009, more than 24 percent of SDSU's undergraduates identified themselves as Hispanic, including more than 1,300 new first-time freshmen.
