Fifty San Diego State student-athletes from seven different sports have been named to the Mountain West spring 2011 all-academic team, and forty-six were named scholar athletes, boasting a cumulative grade-point average over 3.5.

Aztec track and field had the most members represented on the scholar-athlete list with 11, followed by crew (6), cross country (5), softball (4), football (3), swimming and diving (3), men's tennis (3) and women's tennis (3). Last year, SDSU had forty-one student-athletes honored by the league in 14 different sports.

Five SDSU student-athletes, juniors Melissa Bunn (Simi Valley, Calif.), Jordan Davis (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Marianne Hogan (Bedford, Quebec), Josefine Koskinen (Stockholm, Sweden) and freshman Amanda Okun (Newbury Park, Calif.) were each selected twice as members of both the cross country team and track and field squad. This is the second year that both Davis, a kinesiology major, and Koskinen, sociology major, have been tabbed in two different sports. Also honored for the second year in a row was sophomore football player D.J. Shields (Bonita Calif.), who has accumulated an impressive 3.83 GPA in civil engineering.

The Aztec women's swimming and diving team, which captured its first ever MW championship this season, had the largest amount of SDSU honorees on the all-academic team with 13 selections, highlighted by freshman Kelly Marquenie (Gold Coast, Australia), who has earned a 3.77 grade-point average in foods and nutrition. The highest GPA among the 50 student-athletes selected was a 3.88 in anthropology by freshman softball player Katelyn Mathis.

In addition, the women's track and field squad had 11 of its members selected, while women's tennis had six individuals followed by baseball, softball and men's tennis with five apiece.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at their school while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor to their team.
