Creating an environment where all students feel safe, included and inspired to learn is an important part of the San Diego State experience. That effort has again been recognized by Campus Pride on its LGBT Friendly Campus Climate Index, where SDSU is ranked this year as one of 32 “Five Star” campuses in the nation.

The Campus Climate Index takes into consideration LGBT inclusion policies, support and institutional commitment, academic life, student life, housing, campus safety, counseling and health and recruitment and retention efforts.

Committment to inclusion

“Our commitment to the LGBT community, like our commitment to all communities on our campus, is strong,” said Director of Diversity Aaron Bruce. “Ultimately, we want our students to succeed in their academic endeavors. To do that, they need to feel safe, included and accepted.”

SDSU earned five-star ratings (out of five) in all categories except for two - housing and residential life and support and institutional commitment – where it received four and a half stars. Campuses rated by the index each submitted a voluntary questionnaire to Campus Pride, a national non-profit organization working to create safer, more LGBT-inclusive colleges and build future LGBT and ally leaders.

Campus-wide effort

Among the more notable efforts SDSU has made in this area in recent years include:

An anonymous comment on the Campus Index website had this to say about SDSU: “I have found that the administration thinks highly of the LGBT community and is here to support us. They’re proactive when it comes to promoting LGBT awareness.”
