New Student and Family Convocation

All faculty and staff are encouraged to welcome new students and their families to the SDSU community at the 10th annual New Student and Family Convocation. 

The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 in Viejas Arena.

"This very special ceremony is a formal introduction to SDSU," said James R. Kitchen, vice president for Student Affairs. "It's especially fitting for faculty to meet with the new students and their families."

Sponsored and coordinated by the Division of Student Affairs, New Student and Family Convocation is one of the many enhancements to SDSU's array of new student programs designed to promote student retention and learning.

For incoming freshmen and transfer students, the event marks the ceremonial beginning of their SDSU college career.

"Not only does New Student and Family Convocation officially welcome new students, but it helps to serve as a first connection to the university," said Eric Rivera, associate vice president for Student Affairs.

"We know from research that making a connection is critical, especially in the first six weeks of school when new students are making up their minds about staying at SDSU."

Convocation is a ceremony to honor a new beginning. Prior to the 10 a.m. starting time, new students and their families have the opportunity to participate in the Band Run. This is an early morning march beginning at 8:45 a.m. outside the residence halls. It is open to everyone, whether students are living on campus or off.

Band Run

Led by members of SDSU's marching band and cheerleaders, the Band Run makes its way through campus, picking up students and their families at various locations along the route.

Resident advisors and other student leaders will help students find the path, but students should be prepared to walk on their first day as an Aztec.

The convocation ceremony will introduce new students to President Elliot Hirshman, Provost Nancy Marlin and Kitchen. Rob O’Keefe, Associated Students president, will conduct the "Aztec Declaration by New Students," and lead a special pinning ceremony. The master of ceremonies will be Martha Ruel, associate vice president for student affairs.

Parents are also welcomed into the SDSU community and participate in a pinning ceremony facilitated by current board members of the Aztec Parents Association.
