About Smith

Smith has been advising Mortar Board at San Diego State University for more than 25 years. When she arrived at SDSU and discovered that the Mortar Board chapter was not up to par, she dedicated her time and energy to save it. Since then the chapter has risen to pre-eminence and re-named itself in her honor.

Through her efforts, the Jane K. Smith Cap & Gown chapter started and chairs the Honors Council, conducts an honorific tree-planting ceremony that is a campus spectacle and hosts a last lecture series that is not to be missed.

This summer, the chapter was awarded the 2012 Ruth Weimer Mount Award, the top honor for a collegiate chapter of Mortar Board, due in large part to Smith’s tireless devotion to the organization that she loves. A two-time recipient of previous Mortar Board advising awards, Smith is also a charter member of the Mortar Board Alumni Association.
