When San Diego State University embarked on its first ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, fundraisers knew it would take more than large gifts from wealthy donors to reach the goal of $500 million by 2014. This week SDSU announced a gift from the 40,000th individual supporter of The Campaign for SDSU – a $150 donation to the College of Business Administration.

Steven Welty, a 2005 alumnus, received a call from speech pathology major Annie Williamson, who works in the SDSU call center, around 6:30 p.m. last Thursday evening. They chatted about the university, its needs and Welty’s time there.

"I enjoyed meeting a lot of good friends at SDSU. The friendly atmosphere, attending basketball games and living in the dorms," said Welty, who is originally from Palm Desert but has made San Diego his home since coming to SDSU.

The call resulted in Welty’s donation, and a major milestone for the university.

40,000 strong

Since 2007, 40,000 people have given in some way to The Campaign for SDSU, supporting everything from scholarships to endowments, from departments and programs to facilities. Each gift plays an important role in helping the next generation of Aztecs succeed.

“I love and care about SDSU,” said Welty, who owns Beyond Property Management, a San Diego real estate management company. “I've been fortunate and figured I'd share with SDSU.”

Donations have come in the form of million-dollar bequests and $25 online gifts. All of them add to the success of the Campaign, which has reached the $365 million mark to date.

Every Aztec, Any Amount, Every Year

"Through our campaign, our alumni and community supporters are playing a critical role in advancing the university,” said SDSU president Elliot Hirshman. “The ‘Every Aztec, Any Amount, Every Year’ campaign is reconnecting us with our alumni and providing the resources necessary to support our exceptional educational, research and community service programs."

This past summer the SDSU Alumni Association along with SDSU’s Annual Fund launched the “Every Aztec, Any Amount, Every Year” campaign in an effort to reconnect with alumni who may have lost touch with the university, and to educate the alumni base about the importance of giving back.

“Being an annual donor is a responsibility that comes with graduating from a truly great university,” said Jim Herrick, Executive Director of the Alumni Association, noting that when alumni give back and support the quality of the university today and into the future, it helps the perception of the degree they themselves earned.

“It doesn’t matter how much you give as long as you give something.”
