SDSU alumnus Vincent Pompei will chair and direct an upcoming conference supporting LGBTQIA youth.
Eight out of ten LGBTQIA youth are harassed at school, and the dropout rate for these students is almost three times that of the national average.
In an effort to combat these statistics, The Center for Excelling in School Counseling and Leadership will present the 4th annual National Educator Conference.
Recognized by President Obama and endorsed by the National Education Association, this is the only national educator conference that focuses on LGBTQIA youth.
SDSU alumnus Vincent Pompei, the conference project chair and director, explains, “It is imperative that we continue to train, encourage and empower educators, counselors, coaches, and the entire community to ensure that all of our children are protected from the types of vicious bullying that could lead any young person to drop out of school due to safety concerns, or worse, take their own life.”
The conference. featuring a keynote address from a representative of the Obama Administration, will take place at the Doubletree San Diego Feb. 15-17.
There will be a photo shoot by the NOH8 Campaign and entertainment by recent contestant of NBC’s The Voice, De’Borah.
