A team of SDSU researchers is nationally recognized for their work on the aeroelasticity of joined-wing airplanes.

San Diego State University researchers are a step closer to potentially shaping the future of the aviation industry.
A team of SDSU aerospace and mechanical engineers led by Professor Luciano Demasi, recently won the first ever Collier Research HyperSizer/American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Structures best paper award for their technical paper “Nonlinear Analysis of Prandt1Plane Joined Wings-Part II: Effects of Anisotropy.”
The team’s research focuses on the aeroelasticity, or fluid-structure interaction, of joined-winged airplanes. The paper discusses the benefits of joined-wing airplanes in terms of lower induced drag which consequently can lead to a reduction of fuel consumption, and noxious emissions.
The team is now focusing on the joined-wing plane configuration’s structural response with the consideration of both mechanical and aerodynamic loads.
“We will continue to study joined-wing planes; we know the potential benefits of this research are promising and are theoretically huge,“ SDSU doctoral engineering student Rauno Cavallero said.
The team will be presented with the award at the Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference luncheon on April 10 in Boston, Massachusetts.
