The California State Student Association honored San Diego State University President Elliot Hirshman with the Robert C. Maxson President of the Year Award earlier this month.

The annual award honors a California State University system president whose leadership emulates a commitment to the mission of the California State Student Association, who includes students at an exceptional level within the context of shared governance and assists the association in advancing its statewide policy goals.

Nominated by Tom Rivera, Associated Students of SDSU Vice President of External Affairs for 2012-13, Hirshman was presented with the award by Rivera at the association meeting held in early May at SDSU.

“Since President Hirshman's first day at SDSU, he has shown a strong commitment to students, faculty, staff, alumni and to the university as a whole,” wrote Rivera in his nomination of Hirshman. “Within the first few months, he personally outreached to student clubs and organizations, the faculty senate, Associated Students and staff members so he could introduce himself to the community and gain a better understanding of the campus culture.”

Other awardees

In addition to Hirshman’s award, Rivera was honored with the Shaun R. Lumachi Student Advocate of the Year Award for his work on behalf of students during the 2012-13 term, including registering nearly 14 percent of SDSU student voters.

California State Senator Ricardo Lara, an SDSU alumnus, was also honored with the Legislator of the Year Award for his work in promoting higher education and advocating on behalf of students.
