President Elliot Hirshman addressed faculty and staff at the All-University Convocation on Aug. 22.
Outstanding faculty members from each of the university's colleges were honored as Faculty Monty winners at the ceremony.
At this year’s All-University Convocation, which marks the official beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, San Diego State University President Elliot Hirshman reflected on SDSU’s achievements throughout the past year and spoke about the university’s goals moving forward.
“This past year, our 115th, has been a momentous one — a year in which we met challenges and continued our development as a leading public research university,” Hirshman said.
“We know that the work we do together this year will advance our missions of education, research and service and lay the foundation for the future development of our university.”
Faculty and staff contributions
During the ceremony, Hirshman recognized and remembered the significant contributions of students, faculty and staff members who helped make the 2012-2013 school year one of the most successful in the history of the university.
Each year, the SDSU Alumni Association recognizes one outstanding faculty member from each of the university's seven colleges. This year's Faculty Monty winners were honored at the ceremony.
Hirshman also spoke of the future as the university moves forward with its strategic plan, “Building on Excellence.” The plan emphasizes three broad institutional goals that aim to build SDSU’s areas of strength and pride: student success, research and creative endeavors, and community and communication.
SDSU’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign, which is approaching the $420 million mark, will continue to be a priority. In the coming year, the university will continue with revenue initiatives that will create a path of financial strength for the university, allowing it to support its core mission and control its own destiny.
“We must invest strategically and focus our resources for results,” Hirshman said.
