SDSU will honor the LGBTQ community on National Coming Out Day.
As part of SDSU's commitment to diversity, the university raises a rainblow flag every year to kick off San Diego's Pride Week.
San Diego State University will celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community on Oct. 10, National Coming Out Day.
The event will also acknowledge the fifth anniversary of SafeZones@SDSU — an organization that works to ensure a campus atmosphere that is welcoming, informative and safe for all members of SDSU's LGBTQ community.
"SafeZones is important because it fosters a safe community for diverse members of SDSU," said Susan Cayleff, co-chair of SafeZones and a faculty member of the Department of Women's Studies. "We're excited to reflect on five years of valuing and fostering diverse values here."
The event will feature a speech from SDSU President Elliot Hirshman, discussions, a celebration of SafeZones, the unveiling of the organization's new look and refreshments.
There will also be speakers from several San Diego-based LGBTQ groups who will discuss their personal coming out stories and experiences after coming out.
National Coming Out Day
National Coming Out Day is an internationally observed civil awareness day celebrating individuals who publicly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian or transgender. The day is observed annually by members of the LGBT community and allies.
The event will run from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Scripps Cottage and is free and open to the public.
SafeZones offers an ally training program that teaches individuals to become effective listeners that support and foster a proactive campus climate. Another branch of SafeZones offers LGBTQ social justice programming to compliment ongoing efforts across campus.
To date SafeZones has trained more than 600 allies, served as a model both in California, nationally and internationally and brought more than 40 community-based LGBTQ groups to campus. SafeZones contributes to SDSU's Five-Star LGBTQ Friendly-Rating from a national ranking team.
