Bubba Derby has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week.
San Diego State University sophomore right-hander Bubba Derby has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the week by Collegiate Baseball magazine for his performance in the game against Air Force on Friday, April 4.

In that contest Derby struck out a career-high 15 batters while allowing one run and scattering three hits with one walk over 8.1 innings in the 5-1 win over the Falcons. His strikeout total was most by an Aztec pitcher since Stephen Strasburg had 17 in a contest during the 2009 season.

Derby retired the first eight batters he faced before issuing a walk and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. After that single he retired the next 10 batters in a row. At one point he struck out five consecutive batters (in the 6th and 7th innings).

Derby was lifted after issuing a one-out single in top of the ninth due to pitch count. On the night Air Force hit .103 against him and he also recorded a putout and assist to help himself defensively. With the victory he improved to 5-0 on the season while lowering his earned run average to 1.99.

Next game
