Led by eight teams setting program records for highest multi-year rates, San Diego State University set a school-record with a department average of 980 in the Academic Progress Report (APR) released by the NCAA.

Among those programs that scored record multi-year APR figures were football, men's basketball and baseball.

All of San Diego State's 19 athletic programs exceeded NCAA APR minimums. Nationally, 57 Division I programs took penalties and an additional 36 teams will be ineligible for postseason play next season.

About the APR

The NCAA recently released information for every school in the country based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Scholarship student-athletes each semester receive one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.

Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face consequences, including practice restrictions and playing-season reductions. Rates reflect performance over the past four years, with today's latest multi-year score being based on the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

The eight teams that posted multi-year records were baseball, men's basketball, cross country, football, lacrosse, softball, swimming and diving, and women's tennis.

San Diego State had 14 programs post a single-year rate of 978 or better, including perfect 1,000 scores for cross country, women's golf, softball and women's tennis.

Student-athlete success

Two sports earned a perfect 1,000 multi-year rate and were recognized last week by the NCAA with a Public Recognition Award. Cross country and women's tennis both received the NCAA honor, marking the third straight year San Diego State has had multiple teams recognized by the NCAA.

SDSU is once again enjoying a great season on the field. To date, the Aztecs have won five conference team championships, with eight teams (men's basketball, football, men's golf, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and indoor track and field) competing in NCAA team championships.

SDSU continues to excel in both football and men's basketball as the football team advanced to its fourth consecutive bowl game and the men's basketball team played in its fifth straight NCAA tournament and reached the Sweet 16 for the second time in four seasons.

The Aztecs join Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan State and Wisconsin as the only five programs in the country to advance to bowl games each of the last four seasons and play in the five most recent NCAA men's basketball tournaments. Since the beginning of the 2010-11 school year, the Aztecs have posted a 148-45 record (76.7 percent) in football and men's basketball games, the third-best record in the country.
