To recognize his work on the post-9/11 GI Bill, Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA) received the SDSU Ambassadors for Higher Education Public Service Award earlier today.
The award is given to leaders who promote higher education issues on behalf of SDSU and the California State University system.
Serving student veterans
“I have the honor to chair the Veterans’ Affairs committee in Congress … no matter where we stand on the war, the men and women who come back should get the love, care and honor they deserve,” Filner said in accepting his award recognizing his work on behalf of student veterans across the country.
In 2009, SDSU Live interviewed Filner about the bill, also known as the 21st Century GI Bill, which seeks to increase access to higher education for veterans and members of the armed forces. The bill became law in June 2008 and went into effect in August 2009.
In introducing Filner, President Stephen L. Weber had much to say about the honoree, who taught at SDSU for 20 years.
“As the representative of California’s 51st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives since 1992, Bob has proven to be a strong advocate for San Diego State University,” Weber said. “He serves in the critical role of chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs committee and has been a champion for the right of our nation’s veterans to top-notch health care and improved educational benefits.”
As professor emeritus of history at SDSU, Filner challenged his students to act on their ideals, Weber said, noting Filner's role both as a Freedom Rider in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.
“As a professor at SDSU, Bob Filner helped shape future leaders by encouraging his students to put their thoughts into action,” Weber said. “He encouraged them to help their fellow man and to make the world a better place.”
The Ambassadors for Higher Education brings together individuals and organizations who voluntarily advocate higher education issues on behalf of the California State University and SDSU. Members also communicate to opinion leaders, decision makers and the public on how the university and the CSU are preparing for the challenges of the 21st century.
