Student-funded Aztec Student Union goes vertical with pouring of foundations.

First Concrete Poured at Aztec Student Union

The student-funded Aztec Student Union goes vertical starting with the foundation.

Aztec Student Union reached another construction milestone today with the pouring of the building’s concrete foundation.

The $104 million student-funded replacement for Aztec Center is expected to open in the fall of 2013 on the San Diego State University campus.

“As the project rises out of the ground, so does the level of excitement,” said Darin Ruiz, Associated Students executive vice president. “This foundation milestone is symbolic of all the hard work student administrations past and present have put forth in making this building a reality.”

600 cubic yards of concrete

An estimated 60 trucks — about one truck every five minutes — delivered a total of 600 cubic yards of concrete in the northwest section of the construction site. Sundt Construction Inc. provided the concrete services. Associated Students executive officers were on hand to celebrate the occasion.

The foundation work began after seven months of demolition and complex underground utility work. The entire foundation will consist of 4,600 cubic yards of concrete once pouring is complete. A groundbreaking ceremony for Aztec Student Union was held on June 1 and the demolition of Aztec Center was completed Aug. 8. Steel will be erected this spring.

LEED Platinum

Aztec Student Union is designed to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified, the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest rating for green buildings. The Aztec Student Union will be the first LEED Platinum student union in the California State University system.

More than 15,000 tons of Aztec Center materials have been recycled, including concrete that was crushed and used as structural backfill for the new building.

Twice the size of the old building

Aztec Student Union will span 205,582 square feet, more than twice the size of Aztec Center. The new building will provide:

  • Modernized study lounges and courtyards with wireless Internet
  • New-and-improved Montezuma Hall
  • 300-seat multi-purpose theater
  • Increased meeting space for student leadership and organizations

Also included in the plans are a satellite fitness center (Aztec Recreation Center Express), a revitalized bowling and games center (Aztec Lanes), a rejuvenated Cross-Cultural Center and various dining establishments.
