The School of Music and Dance will recognize outstanding undergraduate and graduate students as well as donors and friends at the annual Honors Convocation.

The event, which takes place 4 p.m. May 13 in Smith Recital Hall, will be highlighted by the naming of the 2012 Music and Dance Alumni of the Year.

This year’s honorees are Daniel Lewis (music) and Lara Binder (dance). The awards, chosen by the faculty of the school, are presented to alumni whose accomplishments reflect individual distinction in the profession and a record of service and/or leadership in the arts.

About Daniel Lewis

Lewis, who earned a bachelor’s of arts in Music in 1948, will receive a Lifetime Certificate of Achievement Award. He spent a quarter of a century developing the Orchestral Studies Department at the University of Southern California School of Music (now the USC Thornton School of Music), which has become a model for many universities throughout the nation.

About Lara Binder

Binder received her bachelor’s of fine arts in Dance in 2005 and was named that year’s Outstanding Graduate. She has performed nationwide and internationally with Malashock Dance Company and Mojalet Dance Collective. She is also the co-founder and producer for IGNITE, an annual choreography showcase in San Diego.

Special recognition will also be given to students in the School of Music and Dance who have received awards and scholarships in their field of study during the academic year.
