The men's basketball team earned a 7 seed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Bernard Thompson scored 23 points and Sherwood Robinson added 17 to lead FGCU to its second NCAA tournament win in as many tries, an 81-71 victory over San Diego State on Sunday night.

"When it ends, it ends dramatically. It ends with a train wreck and it ends it's never fun," said SDSU head coach Steve Fisher. "And there are tears, and there should be. But the pride through the tears is what I will remember. This is a team that stayed as a team."

FGCU (26-10), which shocked the world in the second round with a 78-68 victory over second-seeded Georgetown, used a big second-half run to take control of the game.

Now, the Eagles will face an opponent that should know a lot more about them. Third-seeded Florida will play FGCU on Friday night in the semifinals of the South Regional in Dallas.

Jamal Franklin had 20 points for the seventh-seeded Aztecs (23-11), who were trying to reach the regional semifinals for the second time in three years.

The San Diego State women's basketball team had its season come to a disappointing end Saturday, falling to Brigham Young by a 69-58 count in the second round of the WNIT at the Marriott Center.

The Aztecs (27-7) trailed 33-32 in the early moments of the second half, but were unable to recover from a 14-0 Cougar run over a five-minute stretch, as BYU (23-10) pulled away for the victory.

Jamaal Franklin scored 21 points, James Rahon had 17 and San Diego State beat Oklahoma 70-55 on Friday night to earn its third NCAA tournament victory.

The seventh-seeded Aztecs (23-10) will play No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday in the South Regional. The Eagles introduced themselves to the college basketball world with a 78-68 win over Georgetown. Tip off is at approximately 6:10 pm PST on TBS.

Senior Courtney Clements scored a career-high 31 points on Wednesday to power the San Diego State women's basketball team to a 69-46 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the opening round of the 2013 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) at Viejas Arena.

The Aztecs will square off against former Mountain West member Brigham Young in the second round of the WNIT on Saturday in Provo, Utah. Game time will be determined on Thursday.

The San Diego State women's basketball team will make its fourth postseason appearance in five years on Wednesday, March 20, when it plays host to UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) at Viejas Arena. Game time will be announced on Tuesday.

The men's basketball team drew a 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, playing 10 seed Oklahoma in Philadelphia (South Region) on Friday at 6:20 pm PST on TBS. This is SDSU's fourth straight year in the NCAA Tournament.

Other Mountain West teams in the tournament:

  • Colorado State, 8 seed playing Missouri in the Midwest Region
  • UNLV, 5 seed playing Cal in the East Region
  • New Mexico, 3 seed playing Harvard in the West Region
  • Boise State, 13 seed playing in the first round(play in) game against LaSalle in the West Region

The top-seeded Aztecs women's basketball team (26-6) came up short in its bid for a second straight Mountain West Tournament title Saturday night, falling to No. 2 seed Fresno State 76-70. The women's tournament selection show is Monday, 4 pm on ESPN.

The No. 1 seed New Mexico men's basketball team outlasted San Diego State Friday night, turning back the Aztecs 60-50 in the semifinals of the 2013 Reese's Mountain West Championship at the Thomas & Mack Center.

With the loss the Aztecs fell short of advancing to the title game for a record fifth consecutive season.

"We're going home," said Aztecs coach Steve Fisher. "We had a goal to be playing on Saturday, where we'd been the last four years, and we're not. So it hurts; it should hurt.

"The good news is we'll live to play next week (in the NCAA Tournament). And I do believe we'll be good enough when we suit up next week for somebody." 

The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air on CBS at 3 pm Sunday, March 17.

The top-seeded Aztecs women's basketball team defeated No. 5 New Mexico, 67-39, in the first MW Championship semifinal game of the day.

The Aztecs (26-5), who also won the MW Women's Championship in 2010, will play either No. 2 Fresno State or No. 3 Wyoming in Saturday's Championship game, which gets underway at 7 p.m. PT on the CBS Sports Network.

Senior guard Chelsea Hopkins, who set a MW Championship record for most assists in the MW Women's Championship with 14 in Thursday's quarterfinal round, recorded a double-double on Friday. The 2013 Mountain West Player of the Year scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. She also had five assists.

San Diego State senior point guard Chelsea Hopkins set a new Mountain West Women's Basketball Championship single-game record with 14 assists as the top-seeded Aztecs defeated No. 9 Nevada 67-39 in a quarterfinal matchup. San Diego State (25-5) advances to Friday's semifinals with the victory. They will take on the winner of No. 5 New Mexico (16-13) and No. 4 UNLV (12-18), with a Noon PT start.

The men's team defeated Boise State, 73-67, in the quarter final game.This was SDSU's 91st straight win when leading the game with five minutes to play. Three Aztecs scored in double figures, including Chase Tapley (17), Xavier Thames (18) and Jamaal Franklin (19).

The Aztecs will face New Mexico in the semi finals, Friday at 6 pm.


The San Diego State women's basketball team captured the outright league title for the second year in a row, matching the program's second-longest winning streak at 15 games and tied for the second-best conference record ever in MW history. They enter this week's Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed and will square off against either Air Force or Nevada in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, March 14, beginning at noon inside the Thomas & Mack Center.

The men's team earned the No. 4 seed in the MW tournament. The Aztecs will face the fifth seed, Boise State, for a second straight season.

SDSU and BSU will hit the hardwood on Wednesday in the final quarterfinal game of the day. Tip time is set for 9 p.m. PT inside Thomas & Mack Center on the campus on UNLV and will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The winner will advance to Friday's semifinal, which is set for 6 p.m. PT, and will be against the winner of top-seeded New Mexico and the winner of the 8-9 game between eighth-seeded Wyoming and the nine-seed, Nevada.
