Two long-time members of the San Diego State University community are both retiring at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. James Kitchen, vice president of Student Affairs, and Sally Roush, vice president for Business and Financial Affairs, have just a few weeks left in what have been very memorable careers at SDSU.
"Vice Presidents Sally Roush and James Kitchen have made extraordinary contributions to San Diego State University. In addition to the contributions they have made as divisional Vice Presidents, they have fostered the university's entrepreneurial spirit, supported the good of the whole and demonstrated a profound commitment to excellence," said President Elliot Hirshman.
"On behalf of the entire university, I wish to express our gratitude for their dedication and service. Personally, it has been an honor and one of the highlights of my professional life to work with Jim and Sally. Looking forward, we are privileged to have the opportunity to build on the legacy they have created."
The best of the best
Roush, who began at SDSU in 1982 as the director of personnel services, has been the vice president for Business and Financial Affairs since 1994. In this role she has managed the finances of the university through challenging times, and set the tone for fiscal restraint and responsibility.
Her work has been recognized by many organizations, including being named the 2013 Education CFO of the Year by San Diego Business Journal. In 2004, Roush was selected by the California State University Board of Trustees to receive the Wang Family Excellence Award for exemplary contributions and achievements. She also won the SDSU Alumni Association’s Monty Award for Distinguished University Service in 2010.
"As I move into retirement, I feel confident that the accumulated successes of the great team in Business and Financial Affairs will position the new vice president for great accomplishments," she said.
A friend to all students
Since coming to SDSU in 2000, Kitchen has been a major force in the growth of such campus initiatives as veterans programs, diversity and graduation rates.
He has received numerous awards and honors for his dedication to the Student Affairs program, including being named the 2007 Pillar of the Profession by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. And in 2012 SDSU established the James R. Kitchen Athletic Department Staff Service Award.
“These 13 years at SDSU, I’ve had a great staff and great collaborations and I’ve been able to watch this Division of Student Affairs grow and mature,” Kitchen said.
