San Diego State University is inviting students, faculty, staff and alumni to participate in the San Diego LGBT Pride Parade on Saturday, July 13.

The annual event is the 4th largest in the United States, attracting more than 200,000 participants each year. 2013 marks the 4th year SDSU has had a delegation in the parade.

"The parade and festival bring attention to the historical struggle for gay civil rights and highlight the social justice work being done today," said Aaron Bruce, chief diversity officer at SDSU.

"Participating in Pride events is one of many ways our university demonstrates our commitment to diversity and inclusion, and celebrating the San Diego Pride Parade has become somewhat of a tradition for our campus community."

In addition to the parade, San Diego Pride's famous cultural festival includes multiple stages of entertainment, more than 80 musicians, bands, comedy and dance performers, 300 vendor booths, an art exhibit, cultural presentations and food.

Parade information

Parade participation is open to all members of the SDSU community.

The SDSU Pride contingent will join other participants before the start of the parade at the staging area on Normal Street, just north of University Avenue.

The parade will begin at University Avenue and Normal Street, proceeds west on University to 6th Avenue, turns south on 6th and ends at Balboa Drive and Upas Street. The route is approximately 1.5 miles and will take about 2 hours to complete.

Save the date

The 2013 San Diego LGBT Pride Parade will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13.

"The SDSU Pride contingency grows every year," Bruce said. "It is always wonderful to see students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families walking the parade route together. We want everyone to know that San Diego State University is a supportive and welcoming campus to numerous diverse communities."
