In the Thanksgiving month of November, SDSU faculty and staff will have the opportunity to build Aztec pride while helping less fortunate San Diegans.

Aztecs and their families are invited to volunteer their time as a group on Nov. 16, from 12:30-2:30 p.m., at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Use the online registration form to RSVP by Nov. 1.

This is the first of four Aztec volunteer opportunities scheduled for 2013-2014. Details of the other events will be announced in the coming months.

Creating positive change

Participating in collective volunteer activities is one way Aztecs can create positive change in San Diego.

Each SDSU faculty and staff member has also been asked to pledge support for one or more charitable organizations through the California State Employees Charitable Campaign (view email). Registration forms, which authorize a monthly payroll deduction, will be distributed across campus in early October.

SDSU has identified three charitable agencies whose work has a direct and lasting impact on the San Diego community: The Monarch School, The Veterans Village of San Diego and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.

Efforts to extend SDSU’s proud tradition of leadership and service in the community are linked to the university’s strategic plan, Building on Excellence, which includes a commitment to the advancement of the San Diego region.

Campus food drive

The Nov. 16 volunteer event at the food bank follows Aztecs Rock Hunger, a student-led competition with UC San Diego and CSU San Marcos to collect the largest quantity of food for San Diego’s neediest families.

Aztecs Rock Hunger runs from Oct. 3-25 with a goal of collecting 150,000 pounds of food to be distributed through the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Anyone can participate by:

  • Placing non-perishable food in any of the red bins on campus
  • Making a financial donation to the online pantry
  • Making a food or financial contribution at any Aztec Market or SDSU Dining Services location
  • Giving a food or financial donation at any home football game during the month of October
