This year, Associated Students introduced a new government structure that allows more students to be involved in leadership positions.
As part of the new structure, A.S. has an elected student diversity commission representative in addition to an appointed student diversity commissioner. For the 2013-14 year, the student diversity commission representative is Gabrielle Gray, and the student diversity commissioner is Michelle Ong.
Meet Gabrielle Gray
Gray, a business management major and Spanish minor, is interested in leadership development and student involvement at San Diego State University.
Her goal for the year is to enrich the value of the A.S. Student Diversity Commission by educating, communicating and integrating diversity throughout the campus community.
Under the new Associated Students government structure, Gray’s position has a significant impact among cultural organizations and the campus community because it provides a primary liaison between cultural organizations and the A.S Campus Life.
“All it takes is one voice to make a difference for all,” Gray said.
In her free time, Gray enjoys watching the Los Angeles Dodgers, reading and playing volleyball.
Meet Michelle Ong
Ong, a psychology senior with a double minor in interdisciplinary studies and counseling and social change, has been involved in several SDSU student organizations including the Asian Pacific Student Alliance, the Psychology Club, and various A.S. boards and committees.
As the chair of the A.S. Student Diversity Commission, one of her goals is to strengthen the commission and to facilitate relationships between the various cultural organizations on campus.
She also wants to foster an environment where students can learn about other cultures, start communication with one another and promote diversity throughout the campus.
With the new government structure, she hopes that her and Gray’s positions can serve as the “face” of student diversity on campus, in addition to bringing a diverse perspective to A.S. and campus issues.
In her free time, Ong enjoys trying new places to eat, reading and spending time with friends.
