7 Things About Trent Biggs

Trent Biggs, a geography professor, is interested in how humans impact the planet.

Trent Biggs is an associate professor for San Diego State University's Department of Geography.

Biggs is also interested in the study of water resources.

His research interests include the effects of land cover change on hydrology and stream biogeochemistry, watershed analysis for multi-scale characterization of land cover change, irrigation and the water and energy balance of large river basins and the use of human geographic theory for regional biogeochemistry.

1. What inspired you to do this kind of work?

I want to know how humans are impacting the planet.  Work in American Samoa aims to help prevent destruction of coral reefs, which is an important ecosystem.  Investigating environmental change in Tijuana seemed like a way to do this in our backyard.

2. How long have you worked at SDSU?

Since 2007.

3. What is the best piece of advice you ever received? “

In graduate school, a friend told me:  “Stick with the PhD program.  It will end someday, and you’ll have a PhD!”

4. What is your favorite thing about your job?

I get to work on interesting projects where I learn about how the Earth works in fun locations with bright and motivated students.

5. What about your field or position do you think would surprise people the most?

Many people think professors just teach, but the job has a lot of research and service involved. We actually spend a fair amount of time in meetings and doing committee work, which makes the university tick.

6. What is the most interesting or surprising thing about you?

I sing in the San Diego Master Chorale.

7. If you could only rescue one thing from your burning office, what would it be?

My USB hard drive. It has all the data!

Renaissance choral is my favorite, followed by modern Brazilian.

Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers is an amazing athlete.
