The San Diego Asian Film Festival has become the largest exhibition of Asian cinema in the western United States.

More than 140 films from 21 countries will premiere during the festival this year. Highlights include the Martin Scorsese-produced gangster drama, Revenge of the Green Dragons and the pilot episode of ABC’s new show Fresh off the Boat.

The 15th annual festival is taking place from Nov. 6 through Nov. 15 and its ties to San Diego State University are stronger than ever.

Aztec roots

SDSU’s School of Theatre, Television and Film gives its students hands-on opportunities to learn about the entertainment industry. For alumnus Sean Gilane, this experience translated into a career in film editing.

Gilane graduated from SDSU in 2006 with a degree in television, film and new media. He has since moved to San Francisco where he does most of his work, including editing the film "Man from Reno," which is part of the Asian Film Festival this year.

“Being able to sit in a movie theatre with a packed house watching a film you worked on is always a great part of the experience of working on a film,” said Gilane. “What I probably like best though is the limitless possibilities and the opportunity to tell a unique story that people connect to.”

Festival details

This year’s festival has expanded programming and events to incorporate all facets of Asian culture through the arts. Attendees can take part in everything from a retrospective on the history of queer images in Korean cinema to the real life romantic comedy “Meet the Patels,” premiering on the closing night of the festival.

Tickets are available online for all shows or on-site at specific screenings. Student, military and senior discounts are available at the door.
