The leadership of Harper Construction has made the first major gift toward endowing a chair of construction management at San Diego State University.

The gift was announced at an April 11 gala to raise funds for the J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program in SDSU’s College of Engineering.

Harper Construction's gift matched the $115,000 raised during the gala, bringing total support for the endowed chair to $230,000. About 400 members of the local construction engineering and management industry attended the gala.

“I hope our gift will motivate others to participate in the future,” said Harper Construction president Jeff Harper of the gift he donated with his father, company chairman and founder Ron Harper.

More than 150 students will have graduated from SDSU’s program following commencement 2015, and most have joined the San Diego construction industry.

The program was established in 2005 with major gifts from Jack and Jane Filanc, ROEL Construction and other members of the Association of General Contractors (AGC), San Diego chapter.
