Fresh off the Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign, San Diego State University’s Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) College Council has teamed with the Economic Crisis Response Team to collect much-needed items in an effort to aid SDSU students and San Diego County residents that lack permanent housing.

The PSFA College Council’s Lend a Hand campaign aims to help the homeless community make it through the winter months a little more comfortably. The campaign collects jackets, sweaters, pants, socks, toiletries and other items that prepare the local homeless population for the cold season. Additionally, an online fundraiser is taking place through Dec. 8. The money being raised during the Strive campaign goes toward creating tote bags filled with necessities for the homeless population.

Raising awareness

In addition to providing supplies needed by students and other homeless individuals, the creators of the campaign hope to bring awareness to the problem of homelessness in San Diego County. The concept behind the Lend a Hand campaign was influenced by the perceived disconnect of the prevalence and significance of homelessness.

"Many people are unaware of the homeless community right here on our college campus,” said Michelle Sabin, PSFA College Council president. “Our idea was to reach out and help our own community of students first and then reach out even further and impact the San Diego community.”

How to help

Designated drop-off locations for donations can be found in PSFA Room 212 and Student Life and Leadership on the second floor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. Additionally, there are donation boxes throughout campus  identifiable by the colorful hand cutouts. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 8, 2016.
