International Association of University Presidents
are meeting Feb. 2-4, in San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, to discuss topics relevant to colleges and universities, including innovation in higher education.
The semi-annual meeting is hosted by San Diego State University, the University of San Diego and Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior, also known as CETYS Universidad. Attendees represent universities from the United States and abroad.
Among the speakers at the Feb. 3 session was John Eger
, SDSU’s Zahn Professor of Creativity and Innovation
, who discussed SDSU’s current initiatives.
“The agenda to reinvent the university for the innovation age is huge,” Eger said. “For us at SDSU, this is only the beginning. In recent years, SDSU has established a vibrant entrepreneurial management center and an incubator with an Idea Lab and an innovation platform for students to test new ideas for products and services."
Eger said he and his colleagues hope to introduce new teaching methods soon and reinvent the university in the process.
“Higher education must innovate to give our young people the new thinking skills that they will not only use to graduate but to enter the new economy, succeeding where others might fail,” said Eger.
His position, along with the Idea Lab
and the innovation platform, are funded by gifts from the Moxie Foundation and the Zahn family. All of the recent developments are contributing to the university’s national reputation as a hub for entrepreneurship.
SDSU is ranked among the top 25 most entrepreneurial universities in the nation by Forbes
and U.S. News and World Report
