Artistry and Craftsmanship on Display

Students give a behind-the-scenes look into the design and technological elements of productions by the SDSU School of Theatre, Television, and Film.

From actors and music to sets and costumes, there is an artist behind every detail of a theatre, television, or film production. The San Diego State University School of Theatre, Television, and Film’s annual Design and Technology Showcase gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to exhibit work from class projects, as well as actualized work from the 2016-17 theatre production season. The goal of this event is to demonstrate the high level of artistry and craftsmanship necessary for the success of all productions. The Design and Technology Showcase will take place from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, in the Smith Recital Hall on SDSU's campus. A special reception will also be held at 6 p.m.

Each area of the SDSU Master of Fine Arts in Design and Technical Theatre program has its own unique contributions to a production, including scenic and production design, costume design and lighting design. Learn more about some of the outstanding students exhibiting their work at this year’s showcase.

Caroline Andrew, Lighting Design

“I got into lighting design after exploring a lot of other areas of theatre tech,” Andrew said. “People told me I couldn’t do lighting, so I made it my mission to master it. And somewhere in the process of proving them wrong, I fell in love with it.”

Andrew cited faculty member Anne McMills as a “life-changing mentor, and exactly who I needed to get me into fighting form.” Andrew has relished the opportunity to explore her own unique interests in the design and technology program, and is currently working as an intern on the LA Opera’s production of “Tosca.”

Emily Wilson, Costume Design

Wilson danced as a child, and was always enthralled with the costumes.

“As soon as I discovered the world of costume design, I’ve never been able to turn back,” she said. One of her favorite classes at SDSU is collaborative studies, where directors are frequently brought in to work on theatrical projects with complete design teams.

“It’s quite exciting to work on a variety of projects with active people in the field,” Wilson said.

She cited this semester’s production of “Matsuyama Mirror” as her favorite project, describing it as “an incredibly fun and challenging project to work on.”

Sarah Mouyal, Scenic and Production Design

Mouyal has always loved design, interiors, architecture, and film, which led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in scenic design for theatre. She is now working towards her Master of Fine Arts degree in scenic production design for theatre and film at SDSU.

“The best part of grad school has been learning the tools and skills I came to learn, and being able to put them to use as a real working designer,” said Mouyal.

Mouyal’s favorite project is “Reflection,” a short film she designed for the school’s annual film production.

“It was the first time I built my own design in the film studio and we had a really incredible and dedicated team of filmmakers.”

Beatrice Collins, Costume Design

Growing up, Collins’ seamstress godmother made all of her costumes and taught her to sew. After taking a costume design class in her undergraduate work, Collins was elated to put her godmother’s knowledge into practice. Some highlights of Collins’ SDSU experience include collaborating with different areas of design on events for the Timken Museum and SeaWorld, as well as building a half-scale samurai armor.

Collins cited last semester’s production of “Julius Caesar” as her favorite project at SDSU.

“It was my first big show and the first one since starting grad school,” Collins said. “I worked with an amazing director and amazing group of women.”
