“Welcome Week is an important San Diego State University tradition that connects students to engagement activities on campus.”

The first weeks of the fall semester are a critical period for new students to make connections and become involved on campus.

From Aug. 25 through Sept. 2, San Diego State University is hosting Welcome Week, which more than 95 percent of new Aztecs are expected to attend.

“Welcome Week is an important San Diego State University tradition that connects students to engagement activities on campus,” said Randy Timm, SDSU’s dean of students. “Involvement in SDSU’s campus activities is the key to making new friends, enhancing students’ leadership skills and making SDSU a home away from home.”

Timm said these and other events slated to begin with the start of classes on Aug. 28 help students to jump-start their campus experience by building community and learning about campus resources.

Research indicates that students who have strong and positive campuses experiences within the first six weeks tend to be more successful, Timm noted. He encouraged new and returning students to attend other programming, such as Aztec Nights and One SDSU.

These events include:
  • Aug. 25: Templo del Sol, an Aztec Nights event beginning at 9 p.m. at Hepner Hall. Aztec Nights events are free for students with a valid SDSUid.
  • Aug. 26: New Student and Family Convocation will begin at 10 a.m. at Viejas Arena, with more than 10,000 people expected to attend.
  • Aug. 26: Join the SDSU football team for a special open practice beginning at 4:45 p.m. at the Aztec Football Practice Field behind Parking Structure 7.
  • Aug. 28: The One SDSU Kick Off, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, will highlight the importance of and values associated with diversity and inclusion.
  • Aug. 29: The Student Involvement Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along North Library Walkway.
  • Aug. 31: The Go Greek Expo will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Campanile Walkway.
  • Sept. 1: The Campus Carnival, running from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. along Campanile Walkway, will feature a 40-foot Ferris wheel, bumper cars, game booths and a DJ.
