The San Diego State University Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra will perform Symphony by the Sea at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Pier Plaza in Imperial Beach. This is the fourth time the SDSU School of Music and Dance has performed at the popular concert.

Sponsored by the San Diego Unified Port District and the City of Imperial Beach, admission to Symphony by the Sea is free, and concertgoers are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic dinner.

The musical selections  performed at the event feature an assortment of pieces from patriotic marches by American composers, to John Williams’ original “Star Wars” music.

“We are playing pieces that we hope will give you great enthusiasm as a listener,” said Janie Hsiao, an SDSU violin performance major and member of the SDSU Wind Symphony.

Director of Bands for the School of Music and Dance Shannon Kitelinger emphasized the strong patriotic aspect of the concert.

“There will be a moment where we honor and recognize all military members in the audience,” said Kitelinger.

Each year the event draws a diverse crowd, from tourists, to Imperial Beach locals and surfers taking a break from catching waves.

SDSU music education and trombone performance major Skyler MacKinnon will be playing with both groups. This is his second time participating in the annual event.

“When you start playing and 2,000 people quiet down and all you hear is the waves and your music, it’s a surreal experience,” said MacKinnon.

The Imperial Beach Pier Plaza is located on Seacoast Drive between Elder and Evergreen Avenues in Imperial Beach. For more information, visit the concert Facebook page.
