Great California Shakeout Drill

SDSU will test its emergency communications during the statewide event on Oct. 19.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, San Diego State University is encouraging the campus community to take part in the Great California Shakeout, an annual earthquake preparedness drill.

This year, the drill will incorporate “drop, cover and hold” drills. Department safety coordinators are also encouraged to practice evacuating their teams to designated evacuation assembly points.

There are a variety of ways to participate in the Great California Shakeout:
  • Review Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety with students and staff
  • Remove or secure items from offices or classrooms that might fall and injure someone during an earthquake
  • Develop or review department emergency plans and business continuity plans
  • Check emergency supplies to make sure they are accessible and functional
  • Register for SDSU Alert which will notify you of via text and email in the event of a campus-wide emergency
Being prepared is the best way to ensure safety in the event of an earthquake.

Additional information about the Oct. 19 Shakeout and earthquake safety in general can be found on the SDSU Emergency Preparedness website.

Emergency communications

During the shakeout, which begins at 10:19 a.m., SDSU will be testing its emergency text notification system, SDSU Alert, and all registered users should expect to receive a message at the beginning of the drill. Campus emergency communications systems may also be tested, including campus email, the SDSU Homepage, Facebook and Twitter. There will be no mandatory evacuations of buildings.
