Welcome from Vice President James R. Kitchen
The 2010/2011 academic year was a time of transitions at San Diego State University. As the Vice President for Student Affairs, my leadership team and I had to struggle once again with the reality of a diminishing state budget. However, I am very proud of the many accomplishments that our division achieved with dedication and ingenuity, in spite of limited resources.
Through collaborations and strategic planning, we have helped make SDSU a better place for the students we serve. I hope you’ll take the time to read of the many accomplishments outlined in this annual report.
In reviewing our accomplishments, a number of key activities rose to the top. All were focused on the key initiatives of:
- Student success
- Advancing research and creative endeavors
- Community engagement
- Diversity and internationalism
- Sustainability
Student Affairs’ programs and services are based on meeting the needs of all students at all levels, as we strive to nurture in SDSU students the kind of change, growth, and development that will help them meet their highest educational aspirations.
During the last academic year, the biggest transition for the university was the retirement of President Stephen L. Weber, who left after 15 years of stewardship and service. As the year ended, SDSU welcomed its eighth president, Elliot Hirshman. Dr. Hirshman brings a style of leadership focused on the mission of creating an environment in which all students can succeed. I look forward to working with him as we continue the momentum of SDSU’s recognition as a premier, urban research university – a university where students thrive, grow and prosper.
Sincerely,
James R. Kitchen, Ed.D.
