Highlights from the 2010-2011 Annual Report,

photo: Dr. James KitchenThe Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. James R. Kitchen, was instrumental in organizing the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK), in collaboration with the College of Engineering and SDG&E. SDSU hosted a three-week day camp, where 150 elementary and middle school students got the chance to learn, have fun and experiment with technology. They also took part in "competitions" each Friday during the camp to show off to family and friends what they had learned and built

The SEEK Camp was designed by the National Society for Black Engineers in 2007, and encourages African-American and other under-represented minority children to follow careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

photo: Dr. Lee Mintz Dr. Lee Mintz was chosen to serve as the new director for the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities. In addition, she completed her doctorate in educational leadership at UCSD. Through her doctoral dissertation research on transgender issues, Dr. Mintz is enhancing the ability of SDSU and others to examine the perceptions of treatment and educational success of transgender and gender-variant college students.     

photo: Dr. Sandy Jorgensen Funk Dr. Sandy Jorgensen-Funk was elected to the position of CSU Caucus Representative within the Organization of Counseling Center Directors in Higher Education (OCCDHE).

photo: Dr. Rey Monzon photo: Eric Rivera Associate Vice President Eric Rivera and Student Testing, Assessment and Research director Dr. Reynaldo Monzon continued to present their eye-opening research on the effects of residential hall programming on the academic success of local students. They presented at NASPA, which is the largest international organization for student affairs administrators in higher education. The research has led to creative ways to increase the academic success of local students living on campus, and devising strategic commuter programs for those students who cannot. They were also asked to present at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

Eric Rivera also received the Abrazo award from Casa Familiar in August 2010. Casa Familiar is a community-service agency located in San Diego’s South Bay and holds its annual Abrazo Awards dinner to recognize community members who have helped its organization, the community of San Ysidro, and the Latino community in extraordinary ways.

In addition to Rivera, several Student Affairs staff members received a team award for the creation of the Casa Azteca Educational Project. Casa Azteca is a joint project between SDSU, Casa Familiar, Southwestern Community College, and the San Ysidro school district that seeks to develop the youth of San Ysidro into scholars, proud citizens and leaders. SDSU’s Casa Azteca team members include:

  • Dr. Lou Murillo, director of Compact for Success
  • Rosa Moreno, assistant director of Career Services
  • Dr. Reynaldo Monzon, director of Student Testing, Assessment and Research
  • Dr. Maria Hangar, director of Health Promotions and assistant director of Counseling & Psychological Services
  • Angela Guzman-Basham, health educator in Student Health Services
  • Randy Timm, director of Student Life and Leadership
  • Christy Samarkos, director of Residential Education
  • Dr. Patricia Lozado-Santone, assistant dean of student affairs for the College of Education
  • Janet Castro, director of New Student and Parent Programs
  • Dr. Christina Alfaro, assistant professor of Policy Studies in Language and Cross-Cultural Education
  • Tony Chung, director of Information Systems Management

photo: Dr. Tanis Starck Dr. Tanis Starck published several books during the academic year. Chronicling her first-hand experience of losing her home in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, Starck’s book “And Her Name Was Katrina: Life After the Storm” methodically lays out the real story through the words of those who lived it, through historical facts and through her own insights and emotions.

She also published two volumes of “Taking the Risk Out of At-Risk Students,” which is a four-volume social/emotional development model for at-risk children and adolescents.

photo: Rosa Morene, Dr. Patricia Lozado-Santone, Wendy Aleman Rosa Elena Moreno, Dr. Patricia Lozada Santone and Wendy Aleman collaborated with New Student and Parent Programs to design and  implement a Spanish-speaking orientation session for non-English-speaking parents. The session provided parents with SDSU information and tools to navigate campus resources.

photo: Bobbie Grey Bobbie Gray partnered with the College of Business Administration to implement the Mentor Program.  The program connected undergraduate students and graduate students with alumni professionals representing the College of Business.  Students shadowed professionals, gained insight into an organization’s culture and received first-hand experiences in their future careers.

photo: Dr. James Tarbox Dr. James Tarbox, the director of SDSU’s Career Services, served leadership roles in both the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the regional Mountain Pacifica Association of Colleges and Employers (MPACE). At NACE, Dr. Tarbox served in the first cohort of trained Career Services external reviewers, which helped to set standards for the profession. Dr. Tarbox served as the immediate past president of MPACE, which led to a full and busy year, leading the Nominations Committee and overseeing the awards for the association.

Career Services and Student Disability Services partnered with the State Department of Rehabilitation for SDSU’s WorkAbility Program, which was ranked #1 in California for the third year in a row.  Career Services collaborates with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation to provide career planning and job search assistance to SDSU students with disabilities.

photo: Dr. Lou Murillo Dr. Lou Murillo presented the results of the Compact for Success program at several venues during the year. These included: Excelencia in Education, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, the Campaign for College Opportunity, American Association for Hispanics in Higher Education, and the College Board.

photo: Keith Parks Keith Parks was named an Artist of Distinction in Still Point Art Gallery’s exhibition: “The Abstraction Attraction!” He also received a Portfolio Award and, as a result, will have a portfolio of his work published in the gallery’s art and literary journal, “Still Point Arts Quarterly.”
