Aztec Success:  Abdifatah Ali, PhD Student, Michigan State University, Psychology

Emphasis in psychology and post-grad plans:

I am currently a doctoral student in the organizational psychology program, where I primarily conduct research in the areas of: (1) job searching, with a focus on understanding the experiences of job seekers who belong to stigmatized groups; (2) the psychology of entrepreneurship; and (3) dynamic modeling. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in academia with the hopes of being at a research-intensive institution.

Preparation at SDSU:

The education and research training that I received from SDSU was instrumental to my smooth transition into graduate school. The research exposure that I received in my mentor’s lab contributed greatly to the strides I am making in my graduate program so far. I am fortunate to have had so many mentors guide me in me in the right direction, and for that, I will always be an Aztec.

Recommendation to future I/O students:

Two crucial elements that come to mind is research exposure, preferably in I/O, and taking additional courses in statistics. I believe such a background will help you be a strong candidate for top I/O programs as well as make your graduate experience a lot smoother.

Abdifatah is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, is a former NIMH COR and McNair Scholar, and has earned several awards for his contributions to research at SDSU.
