Types of Trainees

Twelve CLASS-EL traineeships are available annually.
You will apply as one of 2 types of trainee:

  • 6 bilingual (fluent in Spanish and English)
  • 6 Spanish learners

Bilingual trainees (fluent):

Bilingual school psychologists are not simply school psychologists who speak a language other than English.

They must also be experts at the interface of language, culture, and learning to effect positive change for SS-ELs.

Thus, specialized training is required, even for those who have established bilingual fluency.

Many of our students enter the program as Spanish-learners.

  • Some are native speakers of Spanish who have lost full proficiency due to immersion in English-language education systems.
  • Others are students with academic backgrounds in Spanish who have yet to develop comfort in their conversational skills.

The multi-year design of the School Psychology Program and the CLASS-EL project allows sufficient time for Spanish-learners to become at least conversationally fluent.

Note: School Psychology trainees must be students in good standing with SDSU's School Psychology Program. This program is a 4-year, full-time sequence of studies that culminates in the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree and California credential as a school psychologist.
