Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University provides an education that seamlessly combines engineering theory, analysis, and practice. The curriculum is design-oriented and emphasizes the development of problem-solving skills through hands-on experience in various laboratories, and machine and fabrication shops. Students are strongly encouraged to get involved in research projects. Participation in student organizations including Formula SAE, the Mini-Baja, and Mechatronics, and in national competitions that feature formula-one teams, solar-powered vehicles, and autonomous vehicles contributes to a vibrant educational experience. Graduates from the department are well prepared to address contemporary challenges in energy, sustainability, novel materials, automation and control, robotics, bioengineering, and infrastructure development. Graduates are employed by aerospace, automotive, biomedical, construction, energy, and manufacturing industries among others, and alumni hold leading positions in both industry and government.

Our faculty and staff work within an environment that promotes excellence in learning through education and research (graduate as well as undergraduate).  Research conducted by ME faculty has been funded by numerous funding agencies including  NSF (multiple divisions), NASA, DOE, DOD, AHA, NIST, and DARPA.  Our faculty publish their research in top journals within their respective fields and are well recognized and cited within their respective scientific communities. For example, the total citations for the ME department faculty is close to 26,000 citations, with an average h-index per faculty of more than 18  (data according to Google Scholar as of 1/28/2014).

Accreditation
