San Diego State University is ranked among the best universities in the nation for veterans according to a new report by Military Times Edge, a publication for veteran and active duty military preparing for the next phase of their lives and careers.

SDSU ranks No. 30 in the list of 100 universities nationwide and is the highest ranked university in California.

“As a university in a military town, it is important we provide the best for our student veterans,” said SDSU President Stephen Weber.  “Veterans enrich our campus with knowledge and experience that benefits all our students, and we are proud to have the opportunity to give back to them in thanks for their outstanding service to our country.”

Five stars for support services

Military Times Edge ranked universities on four criteria: financial assistance, academic flexibility, campus culture and support services.  SDSU was one of only three universities nationwide to receive a five-star rating in the support services category.  The university also received four-star ratings in campus culture and academic flexibility.

Weber also describes SDSU’s support of student veterans as “enlightened self-interest,” he says veterans bring with them high GPAs and stronger study habits.

SDSU supports its more than 1,000 veteran and active duty military students through the SDSU Veterans Center, which provides academic and student services from the application process through graduation.   The Center also helps student veterans manage the educational benefits they receive from the military. In 2009, SDSU was also the first in the nation to open on-campus housing specifically for veterans. The Student Veteran Organization House was funded by private donations and houses more than a dozen student veterans year-round.

Student Veteran Organization

The university’s four-star rating for campus culture is in part a result of the Student Veteran Organization, which was named chapter of the year in 2009 by the national Student Veteran Organization.  The student-run organization provides a support system for student veterans and promotes camaraderie through campus events.

Academically, SDSU’s College of Engineering is working to establish the “Troops to Engineers” program which would allow veterans enrolled at SDSU to receive college credit in engineering for the training they received while in the military.

SDSU is also home to a pilot VetSuccess program through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the Mountain West division of Troops to Teachers is also located at SDSU.

Other local universities ranked

Military Times Edge also ranked California State University San Marcos at No. 40 and Alliant University in San Diego at No. 54.
