Research Spotlight

San Diego State University continues to attract grants and contracts for cutting edge research from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Following are a sampling of recent grants the faculty of SDSU received for their research:

College of Education

Laura Hall and Yasemin Turan-Qian, professors, special education

The grant comes from the United States Department of Education
Research title: Personnel Preparation in Special Education, Early Intervention and Related Services
Grant amount: $249,999

College of Health and Human Services

Melbourne Hovell, director, Graduate School of Public Health

The grant comes from the United States Department of Health and Human Services National Cancer Institute
Research title: Clinician Promotion of Healthy Diet and Activity to Reduce Obesity Among Adolescents
Grant amount: $333,993

College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

Peter Andersen, professor, communication

The grant comes from the Department of Health and Human Services National Cancer Institute
Research title: Comprehensive Sun Protection in Recreation: An Advanced Go Sun Smart Program
Grant amount: $269,803

“Our goal is to see if we can get guests at outdoor resorts to be more sun smart,” Andersen said. “More than 2 million new cases of skin cancer are reported each year in the United States, and it is the most  preventable form of cancer. Our work is an important national priority.”
