Construction is nearing its end on several major projects at San Diego State University for what will provide more eco-friendly buildings and overall better student life on campus. Renovations include upgraded buildings, infrastructure improvements and a new student center.

Aztec Student Union

The Aztec Student Union has made significant progress during the semester as its January 22 opening quickly approaches.

  • Aztec Lanes is nearly complete, with carpeting, furniture and machinery equipment already installed.
  • The murals from Montezuma Lounge in Aztec Center have been re-installed in Montezuma Hall in the Union
  • Flooring is being installed in the Union's Montezuma Lounge
  • In the theatre, workers are installing the stage and flooring
  • Finishing touches are being completed on office space, including the Associated Students Office, student organization offices and the Center for Intercultural Relations
  • Site work around the building is underway, with outdoor stairways, ramps and retaining walls being built and/or poured around the building; landscaping such as trees and other plants is also underway
  • AztecStudentUnion.com has been updated with a new look and information on the building's opening in spring 2014

The first week of the spring semester will feature student-focused events and tours, starting on Jan. 22. A Grand Dedication Week of events highlighting different features of the Union will take place March 3 through 8, with the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Community Open House taking place at 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 7.

Storm and Nasatir Hall

The Storm and Nasatir Hall Renovation and Expansion project is moving forward.

Furniture delivery and installation is scheduled to start Dec. 12  through early January in preparation for the upcoming spring semester. The remaining site work is scheduled to be completed Aug. 28, 2014.  Important project milestones include completion and final inspection and certification of the elevators and approval from the Deputy State Fire Marshal for Temporary Certificate of Occupancy.

Campus improvements

Rennovations on Campanile Walkway have been completed. The steam lines on the walkway are responsible for heating the entire campus, and were updated for improved functionality.

Facilities Services began phase II of a three-phased steam infrastructure improvement project on campus starting Nov. 22.

"We anticipate minimal impact on vehicular and pedestrian traffic as most of the work will be taking place at night," said John Ferris, the director of Facilities Services. "During this time, whenever steam distribution to buildings is interrupted, temporary boilers will be used to provide heat normally provided by the steam system."
