More than 120 local high school and San Diego State University students recently shadowed engineering and science professionals to experience a day in the life at the workplace.

Thanks to the Mathematic Engineering and Science Achievement Shadow Day, local San Diego companies provided an opportunity for up and coming students to test the waters in a field of their interest, and see first-hand how classroom skills relate to the workplace.

The MESA Shadow Day is an annual event held in collaboration with the San Diego MESA Alliance that includes SDSU MESA, San Diego City College MESA, Southwestern College MESA, Imperial Valley Pre-College MESA and San Diego Pre College MESA programs.

Many of the participating companies are longtime supporters of MESA. Others including AECOM, BP Biofuels, HDR and Nuvasive hosted for the first time this year.  In some cases, host companies are led by alumni who make a positive impact on the lives of students, future engineers and scientists.

Participating companies included:

  • AECOM
  • BP Biofuels
  • HDR
  • Kyocera
  • Nuvasive
  • Northrop Grumman
  • Pratt & Whitney
  • Rick Engineering
  • San Diego Regional Water Quality Resources Board
  • Solar Turbines
  • UTC Aerospace
